Last year was a very productive year for The Humane Society of the United States’s Chimps Deserve Better campaign and we wanted to share some recent, exciting news to get you energized for 2008.

On December 26, President Bush signed the Chimp Haven is Home Act into law. The Act, which was championed by Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and Rep. Jim McCrery (R-La.), amends the CHIMP Act of 2000 to ensure that chimpanzees retired into the federal chimpanzee sanctuary system will be given permanent protection with no chance of being recalled back into research. This amendment fixes a serious flaw in the original legislation that allowed chimpanzees to be returned to research if certain requirements were met. Fortunately, no chimpanzee was ever returned to the lab.

This legislation is fabulous news for the chimpanzees who are currently living in the federal sanctuary system and those who will join them in the future. This news also gives us great momentum for the campaign as we continue to work towards our goal of ending invasive research on chimpanzees and retiring those in laboratories to suitable sanctuaries.

We appreciate your support so far and hope you will stay tuned because we will need your help more than ever in 2008!

Help Primates and Prevent Potential Epidemic – With your help we can put an end to cruel animal testing

Primates suffer terribly when they are captured and when they are confined during transport. Babies are separated from their mothers, crammed together in crates for weeks on end, and shipped from ports as far away as China, Vietnam, and Indonesia. They will spend the rest of their lives imprisoned in corporate labs—where they are often cruelly abused by lab workers—and subjected to excruciating and often lethal experiments in the name of product testing and “basic science.”
A recent PETA investigation of Covance—the largest importer of primates in the U.S.—uncovered abusive treatment and neglect of animals. In February, Covance was cited and fined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for serious violations of federal law.
Join Peta.org in their mission to help primates and prevent potential epidemic.

It’s time to save the tigers!

A study indicates that more than 40 percent of the places where tigers could have been found in do not support any tigers. The results of this study show that the situation has become very serious for wild tiger populations. Simply put: tigers cannot sustain another decade like this last one.
This study also helped to identify key tiger conservation landscapes–places that have the best chance of supporting viable tiger populations into the future. WWF, along with its partners, is now focusing its efforts to protect tigers in these key areas. WWF is asking us to help in their efforts to save wild tigers. With your symbolic adoption of a tiger from WWF’s online adoption center, you can help protect tigers for future generations, since all of the funds raised from these symbolic adoptions will help to protect tiger communities in the wild.

Take a stand against cruel animal testing!

For tens of millions of animals in laboratories, including dogs, cats, rabbits, mice, monkeys, birds, and turtles, there is no choice, because they are used in cruel and unnecessary product-testing experiments. These innocent animals die in pain, alone, often without ever feeling the warmth of the sun or the companionship of other creatures.

All these animals feel pain and fear just as cats, dogs, and other companion animals do. And they, too, need our help and compassion.

In fact, in just the last minute since you opened and started reading this e-mail, approximately 219 animals have died in labs in the U.S. alone.

The truth is that animal tests teach us next to nothing about the health of humans because other species react differently. They absorb, metabolize, and eliminate substances differently than humans do. Testing on animals isn’t just unreliable, it’s also unnecessary. There are more effective—and often, less expensive—non-animal alternatives that can be used instead.

Three Ways to Take a Stand Against Animal Tests Right Now

1.Buy Cruelty-Free Products Download PETA’s list of companies that do and that don’t test on animals. Let corporations that test on animals know why you won’t buy their products. The threat of consumer boycott was a crucial part of PETA’s recent victories in halting ludicrous animal tests by two major juice companies, Welch’s and Ocean Spray—tests that can be done without harming a single animal.

2.Speak up for animals with the help of PETA’s Top 10 Things to Know About Animal Testing list. Keep this list handy when talking with friends and coworkers about animal testing.

3.Support PETA’s work to end animal experiments by making a donation to PETA. PETA is fighting 24-7 against companies that maim and kill animals in cruel and unnecessary animal experiments. We’ve persuaded more than 550 companies to stop, but there are others that continue to conduct these tests.

Even if it’s one company at a time, this is a fight that can be won, but with everyone’s support.

Let’s thank PETA for their constant care and thank you for your action and for your concern for all animals.

Be well!
Many blessings
